The Capitols were a Detroit-based singing group that made waves in the s music scene. The trio, consisting of Samuel George, Don Storball, and Richard Mitchell, formed in , and released their first single in He was heavily influenced by the Motown sound and became one of its biggest ambassadors. In , he celebrated his 80th birthday. Samuel George was married twice and has three children.
Not much is known about his first marriage, but he met his second wife, Karen, in the early s. They fell in love, and Karen became his biggest supporter. Sadly, Karen passed away in , and Samuel George has since been very private about his personal life. Samuel George is known for being a charismatic performer, but he is also quite short. Apart from his height, Samuel George is also known for his unique sense of style.
He often wears bright colors and has been known to don some eccentric headwear on stage. The song has since become a classic and has been covered by numerous artists over the years. Their last recording was in , and they disbanded shortly after. In recent years, he has been performing at various events and festivals and has also collaborated with other artists.
Attempting to exploit the success of their hit single, the Capitols released two albums in , Dance the Cool Jerk and We Got a Thing That's in The Groove, both featuring mostly covers of popular Motown and soul songs. Both albums were somewhat of a commercial and critical failure, though Dance the Cool Jerk did spend one week in the Billboard at number 95 in July The group released eight additional singles after "Cool Jerk", only two of which made the Billboard charts , getting no higher than number 65, relegating the group to one-hit wonder status.
In late , the group broke up for the final time. Samuel George died on March 17, , after he was fatally stabbed in a domestic dispute.
